My approach

Value. Flow. Learning. Frameworks come second.

Scrum, Kanban and SAFe all work for the same underlying reasons. I work at that level, so the change lasts whichever framework you use.

Effectiveness

Value

To choose the right things

Efficiency

Flow

To help work move smoothly

Adaptability

Learning

To adapt when we're not yet sure what's right, and to improve how we work

For teams and leaders

Training

Interactive training on agility and ways of working, focused on its three core pillars: value, flow and learning. Built on real situations and exercises using your own work, so people leave with a shared language and changes they can try the next day.

Every course can be tailored

Length, depth and focus can all be adapted to your teams, your context and the challenges you're facing, with examples drawn from your own work. In person or remote, for one team or across a whole organisation.

Making it stick

Coaching and consulting

Training builds understanding. Coaching makes it stick. I work with your teams and leaders on the work in front of them, and we measure whether it's helping.

David coaching a group, explaining an idea with both hands

Team coaching

Value identification and slicing, board design, feedback loops and flow metrics, applied to the team's real workflow.

Flow across teams

When delivery problems sit between teams: visualising dependencies, managing priorities and flow at portfolio level.

Transformation support

Lean change management: clear goals, hypotheses instead of announcements, and simple measures of whether the change is working.

Leaders and managers

Working sessions with leaders to manage the system of work rather than the people in it.

Keynotes and conference talks

Speaking

Talks grounded in real projects, from building a laser for scientists to slicing work in retail tech. Practical, interactive, and usually with a few jokes.

Slice it right! The secret to real agility

Why "just build the whole thing" isn't a strategy, and how slicing work by value brings delivery and learning forward.

Agility unscripted: building a laser without the playbook

How a team of scientists and engineers built a building-sized research laser with no framework, just fast feedback and close collaboration in the lab.

The book · coming soon

Demystifying Value Delivery

Coming soon. A practical book about understanding, discovering, delivering and validating value in software development. It doesn't add another framework. It explains the principles underneath them, with real examples and plenty of sketches.

"Building things is not enough. Value comes from delivering small bits early, and learning from each one."

Sketch comparing all the value delivered at once at the end with small bits of value delivered early and regularly, with cost and risk curves for each

Scientist turned agilist

Hello, I'm David

Before I worked with product teams, I was a scientist. I did a PhD in physical chemistry and spent the early part of my career in research, then moved into software development and later worked as a business analyst and project manager.

That background stayed with me. I approach organisations the way I approached research: understand the system, question assumptions, look for evidence, run experiments and learn from what happens.

For more than a decade I've helped teams and organisations improve how they deliver products and services. My focus is value delivery: how organisations identify value, organise work around it, reduce uncertainty, and find out quickly whether what they're doing is making a difference.
